What to look for when choosing breakdown cover:
Response times
If you break down at the roadside, you want to be rescued quickly, particularly in the colder months. Response times matter, especially if you're in a vulnerable situation, for example, you break down on the motorway or you have children with you.
Home Cover
If your car won't start in the morning before that important meeting then home cover can be a real relief. The breakdown company will visit you at your home and attempt a repair. If however, you have access to another vehicle or public transport then perhaps home cover isn't so important.
Value for money and good service
A combination of good service and low cost is important for many of us now. The bigger, more established breakdown providers have a mixed reputation for service levels and thry also struggle with their cost base to match the competitive pricing from new entrants such as Start Rescue coming into market.
European breakdown cover
If you are planning to drive your car abroad then European breakdown cover is essential. Which breakdown company to choose?

Are you really searching for these additional products? I suspect the answer is no and so choosing a company that focuses purely on breakdown cover would be my recommendation. They sole aim is roadside assistance and so their cost base is low and can generally offer the most competitive quotes. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't want to be told about a credit card offer or pet insurance when I call up!
Most of the dedicated breakdown cover providers have a comprehensive support network calling on the knowledge and experience of local expert mechanics when required. Their understanding of the local terrain is often invaluable during winter conditions when snow or floods cause disruption. In summary, I would have no hesitation in joining the new breed of excellent breakdown cover providers and currently the best of these is Start Rescue.
